신사 숙녀 여러분. 학문 분야에서는 자신 앞에 둔 일에 묵묵히 매진하는 이만이 존재가치를 지닙니다. 그리고 이 점은 학문 분야에만 해당되지 않습니다. 우리가 진정한 예술가라 여기는 사람은 다른 데 시선을 돌리지 않습니다. 자신의 작업에 몰두합니다. 작업에 관한 한, 괴테 정도의 인물조차 자신의 ‘삶’을 작품에 한껏 녹여 내기는 녹록하지 않았습니다. 그럴 리가 있겠냐는 사람이라도 그 같은 자유를 누릴 용기를 내자면 괴테만큼은 돼야 합니다. 천 년에 한번 날까말까한 괴테마저 그 특권을 위해 대가를 치렀다는 점에 관해선 모두 인정할 테니까요. 정치 문제에서도 별반 다르지 않습니다만, 오늘은 정치를 다루지 않겠습니다. 아무튼, 학문 분야에서 자신이 매진해야 할 주제와 관련해 스스로를 권위자로 여겨 선뜻 나서서는 ‘이력’으로써 인정받으려는 사람은 이렇게 자문하곤 합니다. 단순한 ‘전문가’보다 나음을 증명하려면 어떻게 하나? 형식으로든 내용으로든 다른 이들과의 차이를 드러내려면 어떻게 하나? …… 이 같은 질문에 매달리는 사람은 실속이 없습니다. 오늘날 비일비재한 그런 행실은 보잘것없으며, 그런 데 신경 쓰는 이는 천박할 뿐입니다. 도리어, 학자는 본분에 대한 내적 헌신을 통해서만 자신이 천착하는 주제의 깊이를 맛보게 됩니다. 그리고 이것은 예술가에게도 마찬가지입니다.
Ladies and gentlemen. In the field of science only he who is devoted solely to the work at hand has personality. And this holds not only for the field of science; we know of no great artist who has ever done anything but serve his work and only his work. As far as his art is concerned, even with a personality of Goethe's rank, it has been detrimental to take the liberty of trying to make his 'life' into a work of art. And even if one doubts this, one has to be a Goethe in order to dare permit oneself such liberty. Everybody will admit at least this much: that even with a person like Goethe, who appears once in a thousand years, this liberty did not go unpaid for. In politics matters are not different, but we shall not discuss that today. In the field of science, however, the person who makes himself the impresario of the subject to which he should be devoted, and steps upon the stage and seeks to legitimate himself through 'experience,' asking: How can I prove that I am something other than a mere 'specialist' and how can I manage to say something in form or in content that nobody else has ever said? -- such a person is no 'personality.' Today such conduct is a crowd phenomenon, and it always makes a petty impression and debases the one who is thus concerned. Instead of this, an inner devotion to the task, and that alone, should lift the scientist to the height and dignity of the subject he pretends to serve. And in this it is not different with the artist.

<<직업으로서의 학문>> 읽다가 와닿은 부분이 있어 베버를 모르면서도 공부하는 심정으로 번역해봤다. (영어 전문은 여기 참고)
책에 실린 저술배경에서 강연(장) 분위기를 짐작할 수 있었지만, 어조도 가늠하기 힘든 상황에서
이 부분의 핵심 어휘라고 할 만한 것들(personality, experience, science, liberty, specialist)마저 자의적으로 해석했다.
번역의 질을 떠나 부끄러운 작태다.
